Pain-Free Dental Care - Could It Be True?

We’ve all heard of such a thing as pain free dental care. But then again we've all also heard stories of sasquatches, unicorns, and rainbows with pots of gold at the end. To think that a dentist could actually solve your dental problems without inflicting horrible pain – now that would be a dream!

Could such a thing actually exist? Today’s modern technologies mean yes, it could. The key to this lies in relaxation and communication, which you as the patient need to contribute to.

Pain-Free Dental Care: Open Communication

You must be open with your dentist and hygienist before, during, and after your visits. Let them know what you're feeling: fears, doubts, concerns, and questions. Any good dentist will welcome this communication. After all, an informed patient will have less pain and anxiety about their visit.

If you’re uncomfortable, that is to be fairly expected. But if that shifts to downright pain, there’s an issue. Let the dentist or technician know. They may be able to shift what they are doing, give you more pain medicine, or even suggest an alternate treatment.

Your dentist will alert you beforehand if you should expect a procedure to produce pain. Some dentists will call it a “strong discomfort” while others outright tell you, “This might hurt”. If you experience pain at any other time, raise your hand to alert the dentist of a problem and relay your experiences. Sometimes, pain is a symptom that a problem exists and your dentist may need to explore the cause further.

How Relaxation Contributes to Pain-free Dental Care

The power of the human mind is a wondrous thing. We’ve all heard the miraculous stories of the housewife who lifted a car to save her child, or of the people who walk on coals. This is all due to the mind’s powers. What does this mean to you? Nervous and anxious people are proven to feel more pain during their dental visits too!

Remain calm. Be positive in your thinking. If you do this, you just may be pleasantly surprised; finding that you went through your whole dental appointment with no pain.

No one is comfortable sitting in a dentist chair, drooling all over the place, with multiple tools and fingers poking and prodding their mouths. But with the power of the mind, you too could actually experience a pain free dental visit!
